Innovation in the Mittelstand does not come from strategy papers. It comes from execution. A new idea only becomes an innovation once it solves a concrete problem in the business and reaches everyday operations. Whoever stops at the analysis or the presentation has changed nothing yet. That is our starting point, and it shapes how we work and for whom.

Why this matters

Many mid-sized companies have good ideas and full drawers: strategy concepts, digitalization roadmaps, workshop results that never went live. The reason is rarely the idea. It is the gap between recommendation and working solution. That is where it is decided whether innovation takes effect or stays on paper.

This gap is expensive. It ties up budget, erodes trust in digitalization projects, and leaves competitive advantages unused. We exist to close it.

Our position: innovation is execution

We see ourselves as Innovations Engineering built from Strategy, Operations and Technology. For us these three disciplines belong together: the strategic question of where innovation has the greatest leverage, the operational question of how processes really run, and the technical question of which solution fits the existing architecture. We do not answer them one after another in separate silos, but as one continuous path from analysis to commissioning.

This stance is not a claim, it has a basis. KMPC has been active in applied research since 2013, has supported three publicly funded research projects with around 5.4 million euros in funding volume, and works with a proven approach based on the DIGITRANS process model, whose research we contributed to. The company was founded by two business informatics engineers who do not merely assess technology but build it themselves.

What we stand for can be captured in five convictions:

ConvictionWhat it means in practice
Engineering over slidesWe deliver a working solution, not a presentation. Responsibility does not end with the recommendation.
Science into practiceCurrent research on AI and security flows into real Mittelstand projects, not into drawers.
Vendor independenceWe choose technology by the problem, not by the vendor. Data sovereignty stays with the customer.
Honesty over hypeWe name where technology delivers and where it does not. Realistic expectations beat grand promises.
People before technologyA solution only works once the team uses it. Keeping knowledge in-house matters as much as the technology.

These convictions are not marketing. They are why we approach certain projects differently: we digitalize step by step rather than in one big push, we deploy AI where it honestly and measurably delivers, and we bring research findings onto the shop floor.

”But innovation needs a strategy first”

This objection is fair, and we half agree with it. Without analysis and prioritization you get expensive island solutions. Strategy is necessary. It is just not sufficient.

The mistake is not starting with strategy, but stopping there. In our approach, understanding, current-state analysis and prioritization are the first half; solution architecture, implementation and measurement are the second. Only both halves together add up to innovation. A strategy that is never built is worth as little as a solution without a plan.

What this means for your company

For you as a decision-maker, our stance means three things. First: in the end you get something that runs, not just a report. Second: you keep control over data and technology, because we work vendor-independent and, where sensible, on-premise. Third: you get an honest assessment, even when it is inconvenient, for example when a process needs to be cleaned up before AI can support it usefully.

A concrete example of the fifth point, people before technology: according to a study by APQC, around 41 percent of companies rarely or never capture the knowledge of departing employees. Technology alone does not fix that. We make this knowledge accessible and keep it in-house, so experience is not lost at retirement.

Innovation for SMEs at KMPC

We are an engineering team built from Strategy, Operations and Technology. Our focus areas are AI and knowledge management, often GDPR-compliant and on-premise, IT and AI security from ongoing publicly funded research, and the digitalization of manufacturing companies, including our LEANFOCUS product for machine data acquisition and OEE. If you see innovation as a result rather than a presentation, we are a good fit. Our project references give an impression of our work.

Frequently asked questions

What does Innovations Engineering mean?

Innovations Engineering means running innovation with engineering discipline: analyze a concrete problem systematically, design a solution, and implement it through to commissioning. The result is a working solution, not a presentation.

How is this different from classic management consulting?

Classic consulting delivers analysis and a recommendation, then hands over. We build the solution ourselves, from software and data pipelines to hardware at the sensor, and see it into operation. Responsibility does not end with the recommendation.

Who does KMPC work for?

For mid-sized companies that want to actually implement innovation, digitalization or AI rather than stop at strategy. Our focus areas are AI and knowledge management, IT and AI security, and the digitalization of manufacturing companies.
